Fire Warden Responsibilities

Berry Marketing Services will appoint adequate numbers of fire wardens to ensure the safe evacuation of its employees, visitors and contractors in the event of a fire.

Duties of a Fire Warden

Assist in the safe evacuation of all persons on the premises in the event of an emergency or practice. To enable this, the warden should:

  1. When the bells sound, put on their high visibility vest for identification purposes. If the bells stop ringing during the evacuation, you must continue evacuating the building and proceed to the assembly point.
  2. Ask staff and visitors politely, but firmly, to evacuate the building immediately by the safest available exit route and proceed to the assembly point.
  3. Sweep their assigned area to ensure all staff have evacuated – closing doors where appropriate to show area has been checked.
  4. Once the fire warden is satisfied the area is clear, the warden should then evacuate and make their way to the assembly point. Shutting the main exit doors behind them
  5. Once at the assembly point, the warden must perform their roll call then report to the building manager (or their representative) to advise on the status of the area they are responsible for. The warden should advise whether: Their designated area of responsibility is clear, or, if persons are still left in their area, where and why they are still there
  6. The Building Manager (or their representative) will advise wardens when it is safe to re-enter the building. The warden can then advise staff.

If a fire warden is away from the office, they must inform a member of the management team.

Bomb Evacuations

The difference with a bomb evacuation is the bells won’t sound.

Once a bomb threat is received, the Manager will advise the fire warden of the situation.

All staff should then be evacuated from that area to a safe area which should be at the furthest side of the building. This should be done by word of mouth. The staff in the closest area to the affected area should be advised first and then the warden should advise and collect the other staff on their way to the safe area.

The nature of the threat will determine whether immediate evacuation is required. This will be decided by the Manager. It will be based on what is considered to be the safest option for staff given the information available at that time.
